A tectonic plate is a block of lithosphere that consists of the crust and the rigid, outermost part of the mantle. All of these tectonic plates have names and are not all the same. There are 10 tectonic plates: South American Plate, Pacific Plate, North American Plate, Cocos Plate, Nazca Plate, African Plate, Eurasian Plate, Australian Plate, and the Antarctic Plate. Some of these tectonic plates contain both continental and oceanic crust. These plates cover the surface of he asthenosphere, and touch one another and move around. The thick tectonic plates displace more asthenosphere than the thin plates do. The pates that are mostly or fully on continental crust are displace more asthenosphere than the plates that are mostly or fully oceanic crust.
